In short, we are moving from 12 months to 13 months based on the moon cycles, which gives you each an additional theme each year. In order for this to be possible, we will start each cycle on the new moon.

Therefore, the next cycle for our paid circle doesn’t technically start until January 18th… but I already have the entire curriculum plan ready to go and see no reason to withhold it from all of you until then so here it is early!

For the most part though, the curriculum drop will be on or around the first day of each cycle (the new moon) so that parents have time to prepare and adjust accordingly. If you want to know what else you can for sure expect to get from both a free and paid subscription here each cycle, that is also in the newsletter linked below.

Lastly, I would love to have any feedback on both— the newsletter linked below with the updates and this curriculum toolkit you’re currently reading— in their associated comment sections.

Here’s the article with all the updates:
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"72a0ad06-15ff-4b47-a9c9-5ffff5482743","caption":"Hello all! actual curriculum— There are six core lessons broken down into four skill levels for a total of twenty-four activities. Each individual activity includes a detailed lesson plan with materials, prompts, step-by-step instructions, purpose, benefits, and troubleshooting tips.

PART 3: TROUBLESHOOTING + BOOKS/MOVIES/RESOURCES

Integrate the activities seamlessly with constitution-based adaptations and troubleshooting, as well as, lists of books, documentaries, material sourcing, and a final note to parents.

Notes for navigation— I have It teaches children that winter rest is medicine through hands-on activities you can actually do with materials you probably already have or can gather from your yard… which means you’re not spending money on specialty Montessori materials that cost more than your grocery budget… our mothers or grandmothers used sticks and acorns, and so are we.

Everything is organized by skill level rather than age because a three-year-old who’s developmentally ready for Skill 2 activities should do them, just like a seven-year-old who needs Skill 1 for certain topics can start there without shame. The whole point of this section on is meeting children where they actually are rather than where curriculum curators or development “experts” decided they should be based on when they were born. Please do not measure up your child or your parenting based on the suggested age-ranges.

The twenty-four activities to follow all teach the same central concept: Winter rest is medicine that animals know instinctively.

Why? When children learn this early they don’t spend their 20s unlearning the productivity trauma that tells them rest is something they have to earn through exhaustion… or their 30s recovering from it… or their 40s thinking its too late… or their 50s watching their children continue it too….

How the skill levels work:

Skill 1 (≈0-3 years): Sensory, observational, receiving

Skill 2 (≈3-6 years): Simple doing, basic understanding, gentle practice

Skill 3 (≈6-9 years): Deeper concepts, creating for others, pattern recognition

Skill 4 (≈9-12 years): Systems thinking, teaching younger siblings, cultural analysis

All ages can work on the same activity at the same time at different depths, which means your whole family explores winter together instead of separating kids into different rooms doing unrelated things.

<a class="image-link image2 because this is when Northern Hemisphere bodies most strongly signal need for rest, which means children are experiencing the biological pull toward slowing down that makes this learning visceral rather than abstract.

Seasonal factors supporting this curriculum:

Days are still short so less light means bodies naturally want more rest

Kapha is accumulating so everyone feels heavier and slower

Animals are visibly hibernating or dormant which provides clear examples

Winter foods are naturally warming and slow-cooked which supports the nutrition lessons

Cold weather keeps families inside more which creates opportunity for cozy rest practices

Teaching this curriculum in different seasons: If you’re using this curriculum outside of late winter, adapt the examples to the literal opposite of what we are focused on (hot/cold, hibernation/emerging, etc)

DAILY RHYTHM SUGGESTIONS

Children’s nervous systems regulate through predictable rhythm, which means the same basic flow each day with flexibility for what emerges rather than rigid scheduling that ignores when a child is deeply engaged or needs more transition time.

Ps— These are JUST SUGGESTIONS for people who do better when presented with simple steps on how to get started. Please do not take them as set guidelines if they are not realistic or fit in your current shape of parenthood.

Morning (First Light):

Wake gently, no rushing

Warm breakfast together

Nature observation walk (even just to the window or backyard)

One focused activity from the curriculum

Late Morning:

Free play with materials related to the theme

Child-led exploration time

Prepare lunch together

Afternoon (Post-Rest):

Quiet rest time (everyone, including parents, even if just lying down with a book)

Gentle return activity (art, story, sensory play)

Outdoor time if possible

Evening:

Early dinner

Bath with herbs (this becomes curriculum not just hygiene)

Story time focused on winter animals or rest

Early bed because winter is dark and bodies know this even when schedules don’t accommodate it

Rhythm Notes:

Winter naturally shortens attention spans because less light means bodies want more rest, so plan 10-15 minute focused activities for younger skill levels, 20-30 minutes for older

Some days will be “cozy days” where you mostly read books and build forts and that’s the entire curriculum because bodies needed different rest

Constitutional differences matter: Vata children need more routine, Pitta children need cooling breaks, Kapha children need gentle movement before they can settle.

MATERIAL MASTER LIST

Gather these items once and you have everything for the month. Most cost nothing.

From Nature:

Sticks, pinecones, acorns, seed pods

Smooth stones, river rocks

Fallen leaves (even dried ones)

Bark pieces, moss if you have it

Snow or ice when available

From Kitchen:

Dried beans for sorting (multiple types for color/size variation)

Rice for sensory bins

Cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise (warming spices)

Dried lavender, chamomile, rose petals (herbal bath herbs)

Warm water for temperature exploration

Soup ingredients (this is curriculum)

Basic Craft Supplies:

Construction paper (brown, white, black for winter animals)

Scissors (appropriate to skill level)

Glue or paste

Crayons, markers, colored pencils

Yarn or string

Cotton balls or fabric scraps for softness

For Sensory Work:

Baskets or bowls for sorting

Tongs or tweezers for transfer work (Montessori classic)

Small jars or containers

Cloth bags or muslin for herbal sachets

Trays for containing activities

For Building/Creating:

Blankets, sheets (fort building is curriculum not distraction)

Pillows, cushions

Cardboard boxes (dens, caves, nests)

Flashlights (exploring darkness safely)

Optional But Useful:

Carrier oils (coconut, sesame, olive for massage - you probably have these)

Essential oils IF you already have them (used for Skill 3-4, not lower)

Animal figurines, sock puppets, printed images (winter animals if you have them, regular toys work fine)

Picture books about hibernation (library is free)

Teaching constitutional medicine, energy work, regenerative living, and integrated practices. learn nervous system regulation through touch long before they have words for “I feel safe now” or “this pressure is grounding me,” which means massage isn’t pampering but teaching their bodies what calm feels like so they recognize it when they need to return to it later.

Constitutional considerations: Vata children need firm grounding touch, Pitta children need cooling slow strokes, Kapha children need stimulating movement to avoid stagnation. Watch the child’s response rather than following rigid instructions.

SKILL #1— RECEIVING TOUCH WITH AUTONOMY

What You’re Teaching: Bodies tell you yes and no, adults listen to body language, touch can feel like rest

Materials: Soft blanket, warm room, your hands, maybe gentle oil (plain coconut or olive)

The Activity:

Create warm quiet space (dim lights, no loud sounds)

Place baby/toddler on soft blanket on safe surface, older children can use the couch or bed.

Ask permission through tone and waiting for response: “May I touch your feet?”

Begin with feet (least vulnerable) - gentle pressure, slow movements

Watch for yes signals: body relaxes, sounds content, leans into touch

Watch for no signals: pulls away, fusses, stiffens, turns face away

STOP IMMEDIATELY when you see no signals

Try different areas: feet, hands, legs, back (avoid head/face until they clearly show comfort)

Narrate what you’re doing: “I’m holding your foot gently. Your body is telling me this feels good.”

Duration: 3-5 minutes, following child’s tolerance not your plan

What This Builds: Trust, body awareness, understanding that their no matters, sensory integration

Parent Notes: This is teaching consent through respecting their signals. If child consistently refuses, adjust, listen, stop. Talk them through it. Even if they were born yesterday, talk to them!

SKILL #2— SIMPLE MASSAGE PRACTICE

What You’re Teaching: Gentle pressure helps bodies rest, different touches feel different, massage is something you can give

Materials: Baby doll or stuffed animal, sibling if willing, parent’s hands or feet, lotion or oil optional

The Activity:

Demonstrate on doll first: “Watch how I use gentle pressure, moving slowly”

Let child practice on doll, correcting only if they’re rough: “Even more gently, like petting a baby bird”

Offer your own hand or foot: “Would you like to practice on me? Tell me if I say the pressure is right.”

Guide their hands if needed: “Two fingers together, press just enough I can feel it”

Teach one stroke: long smooth movement from wrist to fingertips or ankle to toes

Practice 3-5 strokes, then ask child: “Did my hand feel more relaxed after?”

If they have willing sibling, they can practice there with supervision

Teach asking first: “Ask your sister if she wants foot massage. If she says no, that’s okay.”

Duration: 10-15 minutes total including demonstration and practice

What This Builds: Fine motor control, empathy, cause-effect (I do this touch, body responds this way), early caregiving skills

Parent Notes: Some children will be naturally rough because they don’t yet have proprioceptive awareness. That’s developmental, not defiance. Guide their hands physically rather than just saying “be gentle” which means nothing to a four-year-old who doesn’t know what gentle pressure feels like from the giving side.

SKILL #3— LEARNING FANCY TECHNIQUES

What You’re Teaching: Specific strokes have specific effects, massage helps bodies rest when done with intention, you can read what bodies need. (We have an entire live call dedicated to this in the first week of the month— You will get a notification in your email!)

Materials: Massage oil (coconut, sesame, or olive - 1-2 tablespoons warmed in hands), parent or sibling as practice person, diagram showing effleurage direction (draw one on paper: arrows showing always toward heart)

The Activity:

Explain effleurage: “This French word means smooth flowing strokes that help blood move toward the heart”

Show diagram: “See how all arrows point toward the heart? That’s the direction we stroke.”

Demonstrate on own arm: oil in palms, warm it, long smooth stroke from wrist toward shoulder

Child practices on their own leg first: oil, warm, stroke from ankle toward knee, knee toward hip

Then practice on parent: “Start at my wrist, both hands together, smooth pressure toward my elbow”

Teach pressure check: “Press firm enough I really feel it, but not so hard it hurts. Ask me.”

Practice full arm: wrist to elbow (pause), elbow to shoulder (pause)

Discuss when massage helps rest: “When would massage help your body rest? After running around? When you’re wound up? When muscles are sore?”

Duration: 20-30 minutes including explanation, demonstration, practice, discussion

What This Builds: Understanding of circulation (even if they don’t know that word yet), technique practice, reading body response, knowing when rest support is needed

Parent Notes: This is where you start teaching WHY massage works, not just HOW to do it. Eight-year-olds can understand “moving blood toward heart helps body relax” even if they can’t explain the physiology. They’re developing cause-effect thinking about body systems.

SKILL #4— SELF-MASSAGE AND ADVOCACY

What You’re Teaching: Self-massage as self-care tool, constitutional differences mean different bodies need different touch, teaching is deeper learning

Materials: Massage oil, younger sibling or friend as teaching recipient, written instructions you create together for “when to use which massage”

The Activity:

Teach complete self-massage routine:

Feet: ankle to toes, around ankle bones, sole pressure

Legs: ankle to knee to hip, both sides

Hands: wrist to fingers, palm circles, between fingers

Arms: wrist to elbow to shoulder

Belly: gentle circles clockwise (direction of digestion)

Shoulders: neck to shoulder tops (as much as they can reach)

Practice routine daily for one week, timing how long it takes

Notice effects: “Do you sleep better after? Feel calmer? Notice anything?”

Teach routine to younger sibling or friend:

Child demonstrates each stroke

Checks pressure: “Does this feel good or too hard?”

Explains WHY: “This helps your body rest because...”

Together, create guide for when different massage helps:

Vata (anxious, can’t settle): firm pressure, grounding, feet and legs focus

Pitta (irritable, hot): slow cooling strokes, less oil, avoid pressure

Kapha (sluggish, heavy): stimulating, brisk strokes, less oil, morning timing

Test the guide: When family members are stressed/tired/wound up, suggest appropriate massage

Duration: Week-long practice of self-massage (10 min daily), then one 45-minute session teaching someone else, then ongoing application

What This Builds: Self-regulation tool they’ll use for life, teaching skills, understanding individual differences, systems thinking about when interventions work

Parent Notes: Twelve-year-olds can absolutely learn constitutional differences. They’re already noticing that their sibling needs different things than they do. Giving them framework (Vata/Pitta/Kapha) helps them make sense of patterns they’re already seeing. This becomes foundation for understanding themselves and others with compassion instead of “why can’t they just be normal like me.”

<div
