href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

There’s a reason you woke up last week with an inexplicable urge to move furniture. There’s a reason your children are suddenly feral after months of relative indoor calm. There’s a reason you’re craving raw things, green things, lighter food, longer evenings. There’s a reason the ambition is stirring, the ideas are flooding in, the body wants to run when it spent three months wanting to hibernate.

Your ancestors would recognize these signs immediately.

They’d nod knowingly and say, “Of course. The Kapha is moving.”

Or they’d throw open every window and tell you to come outside, that spring is for emerging, not staying small.

Or they’d remind you that this is the season when the land herself remembers her name, when survival shifts from endurance to expansion, and when the work of becoming begins again.

Modern culture, though, tells you to ignore all of this.

To keep the same steady pace year-round.

To treat seasonal surges as distraction rather than direction.

To call it anxiety when your nervous system lights up with possibility.

To start a cleanse as a punishment rather than a ceremony.

To be productive rather than awake.

Push through, or conversely, stay numb.

Neither is an option your body was designed for.

And when you can’t settle, when you can’t sit still, when the old life feels like a skin you are desperate to shed, you’re told the problem is you— your unfocused mind, your lack of discipline, your inconsistency, your inability to just pick a lane and stay in it.

But what if the problem isn’t you at all?

what’s actually happening in your body?

The spring equinox arrived around March 20th or 21st depending on where we live. This was the moment when day and night reach perfect equilibrium, when the Earth’s axial tilt brings the Northern Hemisphere into equal hours of light and dark before tipping decisively toward the sun.

This astronomical reality creates tangible effects:

This is the moment when light officially overtakes darkness, with daylight increasing by several minutes per day.

This is the great thaw, when the body’s conserved Kapha reserves begin to liquefy and mobilize.

The sun’s arc rises higher each morning, feeding your suprachiasmatic nucleus with exactly the signal it has been waiting for.

And unlike the solstice, which marks a single pivot point, the equinox is a threshold you cross and keep crossing, the energetic door through which the entire spring season walks.

The cosmic inhale has been building since December. Now it finds its voice.

Every wisdom tradition marked this moment, because the people who developed these traditions understood that human beings are seasonal creatures whose biology, psychology, and spiritual life track the movements of the sun with remarkable fidelity.

In Ayurveda, the spring equinox represents the peak of Kapha liquefaction. All winter, your body was building reserves: denser tissues, heavier fluids, consolidated energy. That was intelligent, protective, necessary. But now that same density must move or it becomes stagnation, and stagnation in Kapha translates to congestion, lethargy, depression, attachment to the past, and an inability to begin what needs to be begun.

The spring body is not broken. It is full, and fullness wants to pour.

The spring cold that strikes so many people in March and April is a Kapha purge that your immune system is directing toward any accumulated ama (unprocessed, often now rancid, material) from winter, that hasn’t been given an exit.

Your body will clear whether you invite the process or not— the question is whether you participate consciously.

Celtic peoples celebrated this moment as Ostara, the festival of the dawn goddess whose name lives on in the word “Easter” and, through her, in the word “estrogen.” Her symbols were eggs and hares, two of the oldest symbols of fertility on earth, because the ancients understood that spring was the season of potential rather than arrival, the moment when everything that was possible had not yet become actual, and the space between those two states was sacred. Communities gathered at dawn to witness the sun rise exactly due east, a sacred direction they had tracked for thousands of years.

The Japanese tradition of Hanami, gathering beneath flowering cherry trees, was an ancient practice of bearing witness to impermanence in its most beautiful form, because cherry blossoms bloom for only days, and the Japanese understood that the willingness to sit with fleeting beauty without grasping was itself a form of spiritual practice. Vata in its highest expression.

Many Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island marked the spring equinox with ceremonies of renewal, planting prayers, and the formal greeting of returning birds, recognizing that human beings and the more-than-human world were in reciprocal relationship, that the land’s return to life and the community’s renewal were not separate events but the same event experienced from different positions.

Western scientific understanding of circadian biology reveals why this specific moment matters so much:

Your suprachiasmatic nucleus is receiving a dramatically altered light signal, longer, brighter, bluer, and it is triggering cascades of hormonal change:

Serotonin rises, melatonin windows shorten, cortisol finds its morning spike again after months of sluggish winter.

Your mitochondria are literally increasing their output and your lymphatic system is moving.

The equinox represents both peak demand on your clearing systems AND maximum capacity for reinvention.

If you work with this moment, if you actually move your body, clear your home, eat lightly, get outside at dawn, and allow the accumulated heaviness of winter to complete its exit, you can initiate patterns that will carry you through the entire growing season.

Your body wants to emerge. It is desperate to emerge. But it cannot do that while you are still insisting on January’s pace.

Every tradition, in its own language, transmits the same instruction: Open. Move. Clear. Greet the light. Plant something. Become.

spring equinox as leverage.

You can do all the lifestyle practices and nutrition perfectly, but if you don’t mark the actual turning point, then the equinox passes like any other day and you miss the potent medicine.

The equinox is LEVERAGE. It’s the cosmic threshold, the astronomical balance point, the moment when light and dark stand equal before light wins. Every tradition recognized this as sacred and you get to decide how to honor it.

Think of what follows more like a pick-and-choose menu. Read all the options. Notice what resonates. Choose 2-3 practices and wait to add more next year. Most people either do nothing, or they try to do ALL THE THINGS. Neither really works.

the three phases of the equinox.

Pre-Equinox (Early March–March 19): Clearing, releasing, preparing the vessel

Equinox (March 20–21): The ceremony itself, marking the threshold

Post-Equinox (March 22–April 5+): Integration, planting, sustaining the momentum

Practices to choose from:

#1 — THE DAWN GREETING

New You.” performance is utter bullshit.

For over 4,000 years before the calendars we use now, cultures across the planet knew the year begins in spring because they were paying attention to reality instead of imposed structure.

Mesopotamians celebrated new year at spring equinox in Nisanu, the “Month of the Sanctuary.”

Babylonians aligned their calendar with spring’s arrival.

Sumerians structured time around when you could actually plant and harvest.

Pre-Roman peoples started their calendar with March because that’s when life returned.

Winter was just unnamed dead time between one year’s ending and the next year’s true beginning.

That’s why September through December are technically named after being the original 7th through 10th months even though they’re now the 9th through 12th. Septem is Latin for 7, octo for 8, novem for 9, decem for 10.

And this is because the year originally started around March/April like it’s supposed to. The date also most likely varied worldwide due to individual geographical variances in weather and seasonal fluctuations. In fact, it hasn’t even been 500 years since the Gregorian calendar moved our “new year” to January.

Yup! It was just 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII and the Catholic Church got together to standardize time across territories and make business easier. In doing so, they divorced billions of people from their indigenous relationships with actual cycles while coincidentally erasing the 13th moon— the one cycle meant for rest and inner work.

And now? We’ve had generations come and go living under the expectation to be productive year-round without rest. It’s no wonder most of us struggle to manifest our visions or dreams… we’ve been working against at least 4,000+ fucking years of earth-based timing that our DNA still remembers.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" manifestation, visualization, trauma work, human potential, psychology, and more..

We will move through five phases, which I have connected with gardening as a metaphor for every step of the way: composting what died, assessing the soil you have, resting while spring arrives, choosing seeds as the real new year approaches, and planting when soil is actually ready for things to grow.

You’ll work through five phases across four levels while moving with three seasonal shifts. When these three dimensions align, you create coherent fields that amplify power exponentially. When they stay misaligned, everything struggles and you wonder why you keep burning out.

the five phases of transformation

You move through composting what died, assessing what soil you actually have, resting in the thirteenth moon while Horse year arrives, choosing seeds as ancient new year approaches, and planting when soil is actually warm enough for things to grow.

Composting (Late Dec - Early Jan) Clear the field, turn over what died

Soil Assessment (Mid-Late Jan) Know your actual ground

Winter Dreaming (Late Jan - Feb) The thirteenth moon, rest and germination, Horse arrives Feb 17 but you’re still dreaming

Seed Selection (March) Choose what’s yours as spring equinox approaches

Planting (Late March - April) Seeds in ground at the true beginning

the four levels of awareness

Every phase goes a step deeper by working across four levels of our social bubble. because reality has four levels, and when these levels align you create coherent fields that amplify power exponentially, but when they stay misaligned everything struggles and you wonder why you keep burning out.

Individual is your own soil, your own seeds, your own wild intelligence.

Partnership is the adults doing the work together, whether that’s a couple or co-parents or collaborators, the ones choosing and tending the shared garden.

Family includes the children, the culture you’re building for them to grow in, the soil they’ll inherit and the patterns you’re breaking so they don’t have to carry them.

Collective is how your vision connects to broader work, to community, to world-building that can survive what’s coming.

the seasonal shifts at play

You’re moving through doshas as seasons change, and understanding these shifts helps you work with your body instead of against it.

Late December is vata (dry, cold, mobile) supporting release and clearing.

Mid-winter transitions to kapha (heavy, wet, cold) requiring rest with gentle warmth to prevent stagnation.

Early spring brings pitta (fire, transformation) as soil warms for planting.

Now let’s begin.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Season

Composting is how death feeds life, how what failed or ended or got pulled out by the roots transforms into the richest soil for what’s coming. You’re clearing the field of what died in the year of the snake so you can see what soil remains underneath, so you can assess what you’re actually working with instead of trying to build on top of rot.

This isn’t throwing things away but transformation, taking what died and what failed and what you pulled out and letting it break down into the richest soil. In Ayurveda this is called processing ama, the undigested material whether physical or psychic that clogs the channels and prevents new life force from flowing. Composting transforms ama into ojas, vital essence, the substrate for new growth.

Vata season supports this work because the dry cold winds help clear dead growth and the mobile erratic quality of vata helps you release what you’ve been holding. But vata also needs grounding because too much vata without earth creates anxiety, scattered energy, the feeling of being unmoored. As you compost, you need practices that let vata do its clearing job while keeping you rooted enough to not blow away.

energy practice: releasing what died

Sit or lie comfortably where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes. Bring awareness to your breath without changing it, just noticing the natural rhythm of inhale and exhale.

Bring your attention to your heart center, the space in the middle of your chest. Imagine there’s a gentle light there, warm and steady. With each inhale, breathe into that light, making it brighter. With each exhale, imagine the light expanding slightly.

Once the light feels steady, bring to mind one thing that died this year. One relationship, project, identity, pattern. Don’t force it, just let whatever wants to come forward come forward.

Notice where you feel it in your body. Tightness in your chest, heaviness in your belly, tension in your throat, ache in your heart. Just notice without trying to change it.

Now imagine that warm light from your heart center moving toward that place in your body where you feel the thing that died. The light doesn’t push or force, it just moves there gently, like water finding its way.

As the light touches that place, imagine it beginning to break down what’s there, not violently but gently the way compost breaks down. Slowly transforming from one thing into another. Solid matter becoming nutrients. Ama becoming ojas. What was becoming what will feed what comes next.

Stay with this as long as you need. When it feels complete, bring awareness back to your heart center. Take three deep breaths. Open your eyes.

(ps— additional rituals can be found at the bottom of this article)

individual composting

What did I learn about myself this year that I didn’t know before? Not skills or information, but something about who you are, how you work, what you’re capable of.

What patterns became visible for the first time? Patterns in how you relate, how you avoid, how you cope, how you protect yourself, how you sabotage yourself.

What wilted naturally without you having to do anything? What did you cut back intentionally because it wasn’t serving anymore? What did you pull out by the roots because it was choking everything else?

What are you actively composting right now? What’s in the pile breaking down, transforming from what it was into nourishment for what’s coming, and what does it feel like in your body to let that transformation happen instead of trying to control it?

partnership composting

For the adults doing the work together, whether couple, co-parents, or collaborators

What did we learn about how we work together this year? Not what you wish you learned or what you think you should have learned, but what actually happened when you tried to build together, create together, handle hard things together.

What old agreements or patterns got challenged? What stopped working that used to work, what assumptions got exposed as not actually true, what needs to be renegotiated between you?

Where did you grow closer this year? What deepened your intimacy, your trust, your capacity to hold each other? Where did friction reveal something important, what conflicts showed you something you needed to see about yourselves or your relationship?

What is the relationship itself composting right now? Not what each of you is individually releasing, but what patterns of relating are dying between you, what dynamics are shifting, what’s in the partnership compost pile.

What needs to die in how you relate so something new can emerge? Can you name it out loud to each other without defensiveness?

family composting

Includes the children, the culture you’re building

What shifted in our family system this year? How you relate to your children, how your children relate to each other, how your family handles stress, how your family creates safety or chaos.

What patterns am I actively breaking that got passed down to me? From your parents, from their parents, from the lineage you inherited. What are you refusing to pass forward, and be brutally honest about whether you’re actually breaking it or just performing breaking it while unconsciously perpetuating it.

What did my children teach me this year about what needs to change? Not what you taught them, what they taught you, because children are mirrors showing you your patterns, your dysregulation, your unhealed wounds.

What family culture am I composting to make room for something healthier? What ways of being together, what unspoken rules, what inherited dynamics are you actively breaking down, what’s going in the family compost pile that your children will not inherit?

What am I modeling about how to handle endings and transformation? Your children are watching how you compost, learning whether death is part of the cycle or something to fear, whether change can unfold naturally or must be forced, whether transformation is alchemical or violent.

collective composting

What did I learn about how I show up in community this year? Not how you think you show up or how you want to show up, but how you actually showed up when it mattered, when it was hard, when it cost you something.

What collaborations or connections shifted? What deepened, what became unsustainable, what ended that needed to end, what began that surprised you?

What old movement patterns or organizing ways did I release this year? What did you stop participating in, what did you refuse to perpetuate even when that refusal was uncomfortable?

What’s dying in my communities that needs acknowledgment? What’s actually ending even if no one wants to say it out loud, what needs to go in the collective compost pile?

composting integration

Rest more than you think you should.

Say no to everything that isn’t essential.

Let vata do its clearing work while you stay grounded with warm foods, oil, routine, anything that brings earth to balance air.

The composting can’t complete if you’re already trying to plant.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Kapha

The field is cleared. What died in the year of snake has been turned over and is composting. Now you can finally see what soil you’re actually working with, what ground remains underneath all the growth that had to be cleared away.

This is where most people make the critical mistake that kills everything before it even starts by choosing the seeds before they test the soil. Every farmer knows you test your soil before you plant, you check the pH and the nutrient levels and the structure, you know what you’re working with before you decide what to grow, you work with reality not against it.

Soil assessment is reality-based practice, honest inventory of your actual conditions right now at all four levels without the filter of should, without the pressure of manufactured timelines, without the performance of capability you don’t have. It’s brutal honesty about where you have vitality and where you’re depleted, where you have capacity and where you’re tapped out, what resources actually exist and what would need to be created.

Seasonally you’re moving from vata into kapha as winter deepens, and kapha’s stability allows you to see what’s actually there instead of what’s moving or changing. Things settle in kapha season, they become visible, the field you cleared shows you what ground remains. But kapha also tends toward stagnation if you don’t keep gentle circulation happening, so as you assess you need to balance kapha’s stillness with enough warmth and movement to prevent complete congestion.

energy practice: truth-seeing

Sit comfortably where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes. Take several deep breaths, letting your body settle.

Bring your awareness to your third eye, the space between your eyebrows slightly above the bridge of your nose. This is ajna chakra, the center of intuition, clear seeing, the ability to perceive what’s actually true underneath all the stories and performances and shoulds.

windy, irregular. Your nervous system is responding to the environment. When we say “Vata imbalance” and “nervous system dysregulation” we’re talking about the same thing. Ancient language and modern language describing one phenomenon.

Three levels compounding: environmental (weather), collective (societal chaos), personal (your history). They multiply, not add.

What This Call Is Understanding what’s actually happening AND what to do about it. Not just information - actual practices that work. You’re here because you’re experiencing this. Let’s fix it.

What We’ll Cover Today

The 5 types of Vata movement in your body (and which ones are disturbed in mental health issues)

The most common Vata mental patterns: anxiety, insomnia, OCD, ADHD, depression, bipolar patterns, eating disorders

Where they all converge - the core pattern underneath everything

Specific treatments that work - what to do TODAY

The exhaustion that hits mid-afternoon for no reason. The sneezing that won’t quit. The mucus that won’t clear.

Most people ignore these signs. They push through. They grab over-the-counter meds to suppress symptoms. They tell themselves it’s just allergies, just a cold, just something going around.

And then they’re laid up for two weeks.

But what if you could stop it before it starts?

What if you understood exactly why your body gets overwhelmed by seasonal changes, allergens, viruses, and bacteria? What if you had a complete toolkit of remedies that actually work WITH your body instead of against it?

That’s what I’m giving you today.

This is the same knowledge I use with my private clients. The same protocols that keep my family healthy through every season. The same ancient wisdom that has kept people thriving for thousands of years.

I’m not interested in band-aid solutions. I’m not interested in suppressing symptoms while the root cause festers underneath. I’m interested in you understanding your body so well that you can catch imbalance at the earliest whisper and correct it before it becomes a scream.

Let’s do this.

Why This Approach Actually Works

Ayurveda is one of the oldest traditional and natural systems of healthcare to ever exist. Often referred to as the mother of all present-day healing systems, its goal is not only to heal those who are sick but to prevent sickness from manifesting in the first place.

And here’s the crucial difference.

Ayurveda recognizes that health is not linear. It dismisses the one-size-fits-all mentality completely. It is one of the only medical sciences that provides a precise and systematic blueprint for every individual, regardless of their differing genetics, experiences, circumstances, diets, lifestyles, relationships, or routines.

The Ayurvedic approach to life and health is one of the most sustainable and customizable practices to adopt. It does so through its easily understood fundamentals and principles.

The Perks of Using Ayurveda

Maintains health and treats disease by finding the root cause. We’re not just chasing symptoms. We’re addressing why the imbalance happened in the first place.

Natural: No chemicals, side effects, or invasive procedures. Everything you’ll learn here works with your body’s innate intelligence.

Recognizes that one size does not fit all, focuses on the individual. Your constitution is unique. Your remedy should be too.

Embraces mind, body, and spirit together. Because they’re not separate. They never have been.

Cost effective in the short and long term. Most of these remedies use ingredients you already have or can get easily and affordably.

Simple to understand and implement. No complicated protocols. No expensive equipment. Just practical wisdom you can use immediately.

Time-tested science continuously proven correct or credited in research studies. This isn’t theory. This is thousands of years of clinical results.

Results in sustainable and lifelong change. Once you understand these principles, you have them forever.

Understanding the Doshas

One way Ayurveda makes its wisdom easier to navigate is with the Tridosha theory.

Vedic philosophy states that there are three primary energies that rule everything in our universal existence, living and non-living. These energies, aka doshas, affect everything from the weather and time of day to the animals and plants around us, down to our unique constitutions and tendency toward health or disease.

The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Vata Dosha, embodying wind, lends its ability to move things through breathing, walking, creativity, dryness, coldness, and more.

Pitta Dosha, embodying the sun, lends its heat and ability to transform things as seen in our digestion, body heat, and mental perception.

Kapha Dosha, embodying the moon, lends its ability to build things, existing as the solidity in our body and environment.

When balanced, these doshas allow health to flourish.

When imbalanced, ill-health and unhappiness can manifest.

The Three Factors of Natural Immunity

This is where it gets important.

When your Agni and Ojas are strong and balanced, disease cannot manifest. But if they are weakened, then toxic Ama accumulates allowing disease to overpower our mind or body— including viral or bacterial infections, seasonal allergies, and chronic congestion.

Agni: Your Digestive Fire

In Ayurveda, our digestive capacity is referred to as Agni and is considered responsible for the proper digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients and experiences. A healthy Agni equates to strong immunity and a long, healthy life. Signs Agni is healthy include being able to digest anything without issues and having a balanced appetite and metabolism.

Ama: Undigested Waste

An unhealthy Agni, however, results in the build-up of Ama, unmetabolized waste or plaque that the body hasn’t been able to eliminate. This accumulation is detrimental to our health and a primary factor in a majority of disease. Signs of ama include a thick white coating on the tongue, foul smelling stools or gas, chronic bloating, and lethargy.

Ojas: Your Vital Reserve

The end result of a properly functioning Agni is Ojas, our reserve of youth and vitality. When it is strong, we have an immense immune capacity, our skin glows, and we emit joy. When our Ojas is lacking, we suffer from many nuances, lethargy, and lack of love for life.

Here’s the bottom line: When your Agni and Ojas are strong and balanced, then disease cannot manifest. But if they are weakened, then disease can overpower our mind or body, including viral or bacterial infections like the flu. This is the reason some people just don’t get sick, even if they’re in a room full of sick people.

Understanding Seasonal Illness from an Ayurvedic Perspective

Let me start with what conventional medicine tells you, and then I’ll show you what Ayurveda understands.

The Conventional Understanding of Flu

Flu, or influenza, is considered to be a contagious respiratory infection caused by the Influenza virus.

Whenever someone coughs, talks, or sneezes, they project tiny droplets of saliva, and if they are infected with Flu, then anything their droplets touch can be cause for contaminating someone else. It is often self-diagnosed just based on symptoms, but can also be tested by a medical professional with swab or saliva testing.

Flu starts with sudden onset of the following symptoms:

Cough

Sore throat

Congested nose/chest

Body ache

Headache

Fever with chills

Heaviness

Fatigue

Vomiting

Diarrhea

When it is confirmed you have the Flu, a biomedical (Western) physician will usually recommend a variety of things, the most common being rest and hydration. Antipyretic meds may be prescribed as necessary, while more chronic infections can result in antibiotics.

While most patients recover fully within 1 to 2 weeks on their own with these suggestions, some populations are at a higher risk for complication or mortality.

What Ayurveda Understands About Seasonal Illness

Ayurveda pathology spans a wider range of diseases than what modern medicine currently recognizes, including their rare variations and complications. Because of this, there are many types of diseases (and therefore, many treatment paths) depending on which dosha is leading the imbalance and if there is Ama or not.

All disease, in body, mind, and spirit, begins in the gut.

A healthy gut should be able to fight off pathogens and manage subtle imbalances, while an unhealthy gut cannot put up a fight, allowing disease to manifest.

Flu, colds, chronic cough, and congestion in particular begin when the doshas accumulate in the colon and stomach due to improper dietary, lifestyle, and/or sleeping habits like:

Eating unhealthy food combinations

Not changing your habits with the weather/season

Excessive physical activity

Heated emotions: anger, hate, jealousy, criticism, or lust

When that happens, the body will give hints via early symptoms. By learning to recognize these early signs, it is possible to reverse the imbalance before it fully manifests.

Understanding Allergies Through Ayurveda

Seasonal allergies are understood in Ayurveda as an immune system overreaction to environmental triggers when the doshas and potentially Ama are already accumulated in the body.

When the channels are already congested with excess Kapha and Ama, or inflamed with excess pitta, or depleted with excess vata… the body cannot process additional irritants like pollen, dust, or dander. The immune system goes into overdrive, creating the inflammatory cascade we know as allergies, coughs, colds, and flus.

The key difference in the Ayurvedic approach: we don’t just suppress the histamine response. We clear the underlying accumulation and Ama so your body can handle environmental triggers without overreacting.

The Three Phases of Illness (And Exactly What to Do at Each Stage)

Eventhough Ayurveda recognizes six specific stages of all disease from the most subtle signs through to inevitable death, I’m going to condense it into three distinct phases to lessen confusion for this particular topic and article.

In the next section, I will break down each stage, signs that you’ve reached it, what causes it, as well as, how to stop it in its tracks before progressing.

Following that, you will be guided through an entire natural remedies protocol per stage and symptom, along with recipes, herbs, spices, tea, exercises, and other magic.

At the end, we discuss preventative health and how to build your ojas and Agni strong enough to prevent sickness from getting beyond the first stage.

Their stems were never asked to sway, their roots were never met with wind, and their leaves were never forced to face contrast. This same pattern plays out in human development when well-meaning caregivers focus only on protection, but not on preparation. The result is children who may appear regulated in peaceful conditions, yet collapse the moment life introduces noise, conflict, or change.

Real resilience, in both ecosystems and people, is not born from comfort—it is shaped by rhythm, challenge, and return. In gardening, the process is called hardening off: exposing seedlings to real-world conditions little by little until they become strong enough to survive outside. In parenting, it looks like teaching nervous systems to move through intensity rather than avoid it; to meet stress with trust, not terror; and to build capacity by cycli…
